Steve Jobs passed away yesterday. May he rest in peace. I have been a Apple product consumer since the 80′s because Apple catered to the music/arts community. Steve Jobs innovations have affected my life profoundly. I heard a quote from him this morning that he said in 2005 concerning his own death. I’m paraphrasing but it goes as follows : “Remembering you are going to die is the most important thing you can do if want to think about making a contribution to your own life and society”.
His bout with pancreatic cancer must have put things in a extraordinary perspective for him. He knew he had ideas and the means to communicate them to the world at large and he knew he had a limited amount of time to do it. I started thinking about what I would do if I knew I had a limited amount of time left. Would I spend any of it playing cards in a casino ? Who would I hang around ? Who would I build or rekindle relationship relationships with ? Would I be happy with my life so far ? Would I be happy with my own productivity ?
I’ve got a lot of things I want to do or can do and I’m not doing them. When I think about that in the scheme of things playing poker seems like such a waste of time. Today is October 6, 2011. I’m going to approach this year like I have a year to live and see how much I get done. What music do I want to listen to? What movies are good enough for me to watch on cable even for two hours if I only had 365 days left ? What baseball games and football games are good enough to watch especially if you include commercials — Please !!? I wonder if Steve Jobs watched TV — what would he deem important enough to watch given the timetable that was forced on him due to bad luck? How much healthier would I eat if I thought I might get an extra day or two out of it? What about exercise too?
Dying puts a helluva perspective on living. Nobody is saying I’m glad Steve Jobs is dead. It’s more like “Damn we lost one”. Are people going to say that when you or I go? I’m not trying to be morbid but I want to pay tribute to one of the greatest visionaries of our lifetime and hopefully learn the lesson that he ultimately taught. Time waits for no man. Be productive and enjoy you’re life to the fullest. I’m on a mission.
